Kujira Blue Paper #2 Whale Craft
ユーティリティWhale Craft knives are a series of fixed-blade multi-purpose knives crafted by award-winning blacksmith Satoshi Yamashita, who resides in Kochi on Japan's Shikoku Island. This collection originated from a heartfelt request made to Yamashita-san by a mother, asking him to create a craft knife with which her daughter could safely practice sharpening pencils. Inspired by this request, Yamashita-san developed prototypes and produced the first whale knife – the sperm whale design – which captivated the hearts of not only children but also adults.
Yamashita-san later developed new designs featuring different whale species, such as the Male Minke Whale, Female Minke Whale, Fin Whale, and Brady Whale. While subsequent models have sharper tips and are designed for more mature users, their versatile nature appeals to users of all ages.
Inclusive Design That Captures Everyone's Hearts
Whale Craft knives are not just versatile tools but also represent an inclusive design philosophy that appeals to people of all ages and backgrounds. Loved by children and adults alike, these knives can be used for a multitude of purposes, such as sharpening pencils, cutting paper, opening packages, or creative craft projects. With their cute and eye-catching whale-themed designs, they offer both functionality and joy of use.
In ancient Japan, knives were given to boys as coming-of-age gifts. While knives are tools that require careful handling, when used correctly, they allow tasks to be performed more quickly and efficiently. Whale Craft knives excel particularly in general cutting tasks such as sharpening pencils or cutting paper. Especially the sperm whale model, with its rounded-head design, offers a safer and more enjoyable form for children.
Activities that require two-hand coordination, like sharpening pencils, enhance children's manual dexterity and concentration. Despite their cute appearance, these whale knives are extremely sharp. When using the sperm whale model, it is recommended to hold the knife at a slight angle to the pencil tip and whittle away from yourself.
The Unique History of Tosa Knives: A Modern Interpretation of Traditional Craftsmanship
The Whale Craft knife series originates from the Kochi region, historically known as Tosa in Japan. While these knives are not produced entirely with traditional Tosa techniques, they reflect the essence of Tosa craftsmanship by adapting it to modern needs.
One of the distinctive features of Tosa knives is the free-forging technique known as "Jiyu-tanzo." This traditional method involves each knife being individually hand-forged rather than shaped using molds or machines. Although challenging for mass production, this artisanal method grants craftsmen the freedom for creativity and experimentation. As a result, diverse and unique products are created in small batches. Whale Craft knives achieve a perfect balance between traditional techniques and a modern approach, reflecting the Tosa knife culture in an original way.
A Celebration of Superior Craftsmanship: The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry Award
Yamashita's designs have been widely appreciated in Japan and were awarded the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry Award. This prestigious award honors the exceptional craftsmanship and innovation in the design and production of Whale Craft knives. The popularity of these knives as souvenir products has also significantly contributed to the local economy and tourism of the Kochi region.
