Tsunehisa Hamono
SLD is a semi-stainless tool steel developed by Hitachi Metals in Japan, offering high wear resistance. Originally designed as a cold-work tool steel, it is frequently preferred by kitchen knife manufacturers due to its high hardness, durability, and ease of sharpening. Its hardness, ranging from 60–63 HRC, ensures a long-lasting sharp edge.
SLD steel offers a sharpness performance very close to that of carbon steels, while providing basic corrosion resistance thanks to its chromium content. This results in lower maintenance requirements compared to pure carbon steel. It is a robust and reliable choice for both professional kitchens and home users.
Chemical Composition:
It contains 1.40% Carbon (C), 11.00–13.00% Chromium (Cr), 0.80% Molybdenum (Mo), 0.20–0.30% Vanadium (V), and small amounts of Manganese (Mn), Silicon (Si), Phosphorus (P), and Sulfur (S).
